Tipping is not compulsory, but usually expected as a sign of appreciation for a good service. In Tanzania it is a custom to tip local guides, porters and drivers. At the hotel/lodge things are differ from one hotel/lodge to another, some hotels they tip a person who serve them but to others there is a tip box to collect all tips, which will be divided equally to all staff at the end of each month or weekly basis. (it recommended to ask their tipping rules).
Don’t give indiscriminately money, pens or sweets like a wealthy Western Santa Claus. This will just encourage begging. Gifts should be given as a true expression of friendship, appreciation and thanks.
